Simple Care to Make PVC Last for Decades

PVC windows are designed for long, trouble‑free service, but even the most reliable design will last longer with proper care. Good maintenance doesn’t require complicated procedures — just a few regular steps are enough to keep the windows airtight, clean, and easy to use.

Start with cleanliness: wash the glass with a soft cloth or sponge, avoiding abrasive products. Stiff brushes and powders scratch the surface, and over time these micro‑damages make the glass look cloudy. For the profile, choose a neutral cleaning agent: harsh chemicals can damage the protective layer of the plastic and change its colour. Pay special attention to the seams and joints — dust and dirt accumulate there, and over time this can reduce the window’s airtightness.

Caring for the hardware and seals is just as important. Clean the rubber seals at least twice a year to remove dust, then treat them with silicone or a special sealant. This keeps the rubber elastic and prevents it from drying out. Check the hardware (hinges, latches, cam pins) regularly, remove any dust, and lubricate with machine oil or a dedicated window mechanism product when needed. If a sash starts to close poorly or becomes misaligned, adjust it right away: small tweaks can prevent major breakdowns.

Another key point is how you use the windows. In winter, avoid leaving them on intensive ventilation for long periods. Sudden temperature changes and high humidity can lead to condensation and ice build‑up, which damages both the seals and the hardware. In the transitional seasons, it’s a good idea to check the seal tightness: a sheet of paper held between the sash and frame should stay firmly in place all around the perimeter.

Of course, a lot also depends on proper installation and the initial quality of the components. Even the most diligent care won’t save a window that was installed incorrectly. But with proper installation and simple, regular maintenance, PVC windows can keep your home warm and quiet and maintain a neat appearance for decades without needing major repairs.
