PVC windows seem reliable and almost maintenance‑free, but their accessories are complex mechanisms with many moving parts. Like any mechanism, they need regular lubrication: this extends their service life, prevents squeaking and jamming, and keeps sash movement smooth.
Without lubrication, metal is prone to wear and corrosion. Dust and dirt, mixing with leftover factory lubricant, form an abrasive mass. Over time, this leads to stiff handle operation, squeaking, uneven sash closing, and even breakage. Signs that it’s time to lubricate the accessories include:
squeaking when opening or closing;
stiff handle movement;
clicking or crunching sounds in the mechanism;
the window not closing tightly.
The optimal lubrication frequency is 1–2 times a year, preferably in spring and autumn. Spring maintenance helps restore mechanism performance after winter loads, while autumn maintenance prepares the window for cold weather.
Suitable lubricants include:
special formulations for window accessories;
silicone oils;
light machine oils without aggressive additives;
aerosols with anti‑corrosion properties.
Before application, clean the accessories from dust and old lubricant. Apply the product precisely to moving parts — hinges, cams, locking strips, and the handle mechanism. Then open and close the window several times to distribute the lubricant, and remove any excess with a dry cloth.
Avoid thick lubricants (such as grease or lithium grease), vegetable oil, petroleum jelly, and using WD‑40 as a permanent lubricant — these can do more harm than good.
Regular care of window accessories is a simple yet important habit. It preserves comfortable window use and helps avoid costly repairs down the line.
