Arched windows are one of the most recognizable elements of “old‑world” charm, and today this look can be easily achieved with modern PVC. Their main aesthetic strength lies in their ability to soften the strict geometry of a facade: the smooth curve visually makes a house more harmonious, adding a sense of prestige and even a touch of grandeur.
The most common types are semicircular arches (a classic half‑circle) and segmental arches (with a gentler curve). In historical styles, pointed arches with a sharp apex are appropriate, while modern architecture often favors minimalist segmental shapes that don’t overwhelm the building’s appearance. Arched windows look particularly impressive on facades made of brick, stone, or plaster: the contrast between the soft curve and the textured wall creates a striking artistic effect.
From an interior design perspective, an arch also shapes the atmosphere. In a living room, it sets a formal, elegant tone; in a bedroom, it creates an intimate feel; and on a staircase or in a hall, it emphasizes height and the rhythm of the space. It’s not uncommon to make the upper part a fixed decorative arch and place rectangular opening sashes below: this preserves the eye‑catching silhouette while keeping ventilation and maintenance convenient.
The play of light is another important factor: the rounded top lets light in at a different angle, creating soft, flowing shadows in the room. Combined with decorative glazing bars or stained glass, an arch can become a true art piece. Modern technologies also allow the profile to be laminated to look like wood or painted in any shade, so the window fits perfectly into the home’s colour scheme — from warm oak to graphite grey.
The key rule when choosing an arched window is proportionality. An overly large arch on a small facade looks bulky, while a too‑narrow one gets lost against the wall. The ideal is when the arch’s height is roughly one‑third to one‑half of the opening’s width. This proportion looks natural and elegant without disrupting the building’s balance.
