How to Remove Protective Film from New Windows Without Stress

After installing plastic windows, you often find protective film on the profiles — it safeguards the surface during transportation and installation. However, if you don’t remove it promptly, the adhesive can set firmly. Here’s how to get rid of the film quickly and without leaving any residue.

Step 1. Check the timeframe
The ideal time to remove the film is within the first 2–3 weeks after installation. After that, the adhesive starts to polymerize, making the task more challenging.

Step 2. Gather your tools
You’ll need:

• a plastic scraper (or a credit card);
• a hair dryer (household or construction-grade);
• a soft cloth;
• glass cleaner or soapy water.

Step 3. Soften the adhesive
Set the hair dryer to medium heat and warm the film in sections (10–15 seconds). The heat will make the adhesive more elastic, allowing the film to peel off more easily. Avoid overheating — it may warp the plastic.

Step 4. Carefully remove the film
Lift the edge with the plastic scraper and slowly pull at an acute angle to the surface. If the film tears, reheat the area.

Step 5. Clean off any remaining adhesive
Wipe the surface with a cloth dipped in soapy water or glass cleaner. For stubborn residue, you can use alcohol (test on an inconspicuous spot first — some profiles are sensitive to alcohol-based solutions).

Important warnings:

• Avoid metal scrapers — they can scratch the surface.
• Don’t use acetone or solvents — they may damage the profile coating.
• Wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges.

Bonus tip: if the film is stubborn, try a home remedy — apply vegetable oil to the film for 15–20 minutes. The oil will soften the adhesive, making the film easier to remove.
