Today's appearance of plastic windows is quite different from the original version. Their story is rather interesting.
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of the oldest artificial materials, because its invention relates to 1835.
The first company started the production of PVC was BASF.
For the first time attempt of replacing the wooden frames to plastic was done at 1912 but they did not go to mass production because of imperfection of technology of that time.
BASF became the world's first manufacturer of PVC and acted as a locomotive of the industrial production of plastics. In 1931, the company has developed advanced method of manufacture of PVC and run the factory manufactures the products made of this material.Wide use of plastic was not for the manufacture of window frames. It was mainly for the production of pipes, film coatings, insulating materials, linoleum.
Despite the success of European manufacturers of plastic, first PVC windows were released in the United States.
The first patent for the production of plastic window frames were received in 1952 by the German designer. The first PVC windows were much less perfect than modern designs but the beginning of industrial production has become a serious stimulus for further research.
Surprisingly, the glazing was patented much earlier than plastic frames. This happened also in Germany in 1865.
