How not to harm PVC windows: rules of operation

PVC windows look sturdy, but they have weak spots — and it’s easier to damage them than you might think.

The glass units are the most commonly affected. A strong impact from a hard object (like a ball or a tool) can easily cause a crack or a сквозной chip. Even localized pressure — for example, pressing sharply with a sharp corner of furniture — can create micro‑damage that grows over time.

The frame and sashes are prone to deformation. If you constantly open the window with a jerk, hang heavy items on the sash, or prop it open with rigid objects, the hinges will loosen and the profile will warp. Another frequent mistake is cleaning with aggressive chemicals. Products containing acetone, solvents, or abrasive particles can eat away at the coating and make the plastic look cloudy.

The sealant is also easy to damage. Direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations gradually make the rubber hard and brittle. If you clean the sealant with alcohol‑based products, it loses elasticity faster and starts letting cold air in.

Hardware fails due to careless use: trying to force a window closed when the sash is misaligned can break the locking mechanisms. Improper maintenance — for example, lubricating with unsuitable oils — speeds up wear.

Finally, mistakes during installation and repairs can cause hidden damage: a poorly secured frame will loosen over time, and sloppy finishing of the reveals can compromise the seal.

To make your windows last longer, just avoid rough mechanical impacts, use gentle cleaning products, and regularly maintain the hardware and seals.
