Annual Lubrication of PVC Window Accessories: Caring for Longevity

Regular maintenance of PVC window hardware is key to smooth operation and a long service life. Annual lubrication not only eliminates squeaks and stiff handle movement but also protects metal components from wear and corrosion, preserving the sash’s airtightness.

It’s best to carry out this procedure in spring or autumn, combining it with routine window cleaning. First, carefully clean the visible parts of the mechanism from dust and old lubricant — a soft brush or a dry lint‑free cloth works well for this. Avoid applying new lubricant over dirt: mixed with dust, it turns into an abrasive that speeds up part wear.

Use a dedicated oil or synthetic lubricant for metal elements — they’re resistant to temperature fluctuations and provide long‑lasting protection. Avoid vegetable oils and WD‑40: the former quickly thickens and attracts dirt, while the latter only removes old lubricant without offering durable protection.

Apply the product precisely to moving components — hinges, cam pins, the scissor mechanism, and strike plates. Just 1–2 drops per point are enough. Then open and close the sash several times and move the handle through all positions — this helps the lubricant spread evenly across the rubbing surfaces. Treat the seal separately with silicone lubricant: it keeps the rubber flexible and protects it from cracking.

In the end, proper annual lubrication is a simple yet important preventive measure: it ensures quiet, reliable window operation and significantly extends the hardware’s lifespan.
