How PVC Windows Open

PVC windows have become a common sight, but their mechanisms are a true piece of engineering choreography. It all starts with a simple handle: turning it sets the cams and hinges in motion, and the sash smoothly changes position.

The most widespread option is the tilt-and-turn mechanism. It gives the window two “moods”: to swing wide open for intensive ventilation or to tilt slightly at the top so fresh air comes in without creating a draft. If you turn the handle to a 45° angle, you activate the micro-ventilation mode — the narrow gap is barely noticeable, but it’s enough to keep the room aired even in cold weather.

Turning sashes work on a classic principle: they swing open on hinges like doors. This is handy when you need to ventilate the room quickly, but it requires free space — you’ll have to clear the windowsill of pots and books. Tilt-only sashes, by contrast, save space: they open only at the top, so you can safely keep your favourite items on the windowsill.

For balconies and tight spaces, sliding systems were designed: the sashes glide along guides without taking up any useful floor space. In larger openings, you can find rarer solutions, such as false-mullion (shtulp) windows without a central partition: when fully opened, the opening remains unobstructed, as if there were no wall at all.

Each opening method solves a specific task: some make the room brighter and more spacious, others save space, and still others provide a gentle flow of fresh air. The key is to have reliable hardware and regular maintenance: lubrication and adjustments will keep the mechanism moving smoothly for a long time.
