PVC Windows: How to Keep Them Functional for Years

PVC windows can last for decades — but only with proper care. Regular attention to detail will preserve their appearance, airtightness, and the smooth operation of their mechanisms.

Start with regular cleaning: wash the profile and glass twice a year using soapy water or special PVC‑friendly cleaners. Avoid products containing acetone, abrasives, or solvents — they can damage the surface and cause the plastic to yellow. For double‑glazed units, choose streak‑free sprays with an antistatic effect: they not only clean but also slow down dust accumulation.

Pay special attention to the seals: wipe them with a damp and then a dry soft cloth, and lubricate them with silicone grease twice a year. This will maintain the elasticity of the rubber, ensure a tight fit of the sash, and protect against drafts.

Don’t forget about the drainage holes in the frame — they channel away moisture and condensate. Clean them of dust and debris using a cotton swab or thin wire; for heavy dirt, rinse with soapy water.

The hardware — hinges, locks, and handles — also needs maintenance: clean off dirt 2–3 times a year and apply protective lubricant (silicone oil or technical petroleum jelly). This will prevent squeaking, jamming, and corrosion.

In spring and summer, keep an eye on the insect screens: wash them at least once a month with a soft sponge and a gentle cleaner, then let them dry naturally. Before winter, it’s best to remove the screens and store them in a dry place.

Finally, ahead of the cold season, check the hardware mode: switch the window to “winter” mode to increase the pressure of the sash against the frame. This will protect the room from drafts and prevent premature wear of the seal.

Simple, regular care will extend the life of your PVC windows and keep your home comfortable for many years to come.
