Clean windows let in more light and make a home cozier — and to keep PVC windows looking good and functioning properly for a long time, it’s important to clean them the right way. Let’s see how to do it without unnecessary hassle and without risking damage to the structure.
Start by choosing the right products. Avoid abrasive powders and harsh chemical formulas: they can scratch the profile and damage the seals. The best choice is mild liquid detergents or a special PVC cleaner. For glass, use regular window‑cleaning products without ammonia.
Before washing, wipe the frame and sashes with a damp soft cloth to remove dust and large debris. This helps prevent scratches during further cleaning. Then apply the detergent to the profile surface and gently wipe with a sponge or microfibre cloth. It’s best to move along the surface, not across it — this reduces the risk of leaving marks.
Pay special attention to the seals: just wipe them with a damp cloth. After cleaning, it’s a good idea to treat the rubber elements with silicone lubricant — this extends their lifespan and maintains their flexibility.
Clean the glass last. Apply the glass cleaner, then wipe the surface with a lint‑free cloth or newspaper to avoid streaks. For hard‑to‑reach areas (such as frame corners), use a soft brush or cotton swabs.
Don’t forget the drainage holes at the bottom of the frame: they channel away moisture and can get clogged. Gently clear them of dust and debris with a thin stick or brush.
After cleaning, check the hardware: wipe the hinges and mechanisms with a damp cloth, then a dry one. This prevents dirt build‑up and ensures smooth sash operation.
Do this cleaning twice a year — in spring and autumn. This way, you’ll preserve the windows’ appearance and extend their service life without extra costs.
