PVC windows: what threatens their durability

PVC windows are known for their reliability and durability, but they are not immune to damage. Let’s look at the factors that can shorten their service life and spoil their appearance.

One of the main threats is incorrect installation. Frame misalignment, insufficient sealing or installation errors lead to drafts, freezing and accelerated wear of the structure.

Mechanical damage is also common: accidental impacts, excessive force when closing a sash or attempts to open the window from the outside can cause cracks in the profile or glazing unit, and damage the hardware.

Exposure to UV radiation and temperature fluctuations gradually alters the properties of PVC: low‑quality profiles may turn yellow, lose elasticity and even develop micro‑cracks. Extreme heat or cold combined with high humidity make the situation worse.

Dirt accumulation and lack of maintenance are another source of problems. Dust and grime build‑up in the hardware mechanisms disrupts their operation, while abrasive cleaning agents scratch the surface of the profile.

Worn‑out seals reduce airtightness: the rubber loses elasticity, cracks and lets cold air in. This not only worsens the indoor climate but also forces more frequent hardware adjustments.

Finally, factory defects are rare but possible: profile flaws, poor reinforcement or inherently weak hardware can shorten the window’s lifespan from the very first days of use.

To extend the life of PVC windows, it’s important to install them properly, maintain them regularly and handle them with care — then they will serve for many years without issues.
