Japanese developers have tried to increase the proportion of aluminum oxide in the glass composition, thereby creating super strong glass, which is almost impossible to break and that is as strong as steel. To create glass with such properties it was not enough simply to increase the mass fraction of aluminum oxide in its composition, the technology of production itself had to be changed.
Usually all the components are mixed in a special container, however for the production of the new glass they learned to mix ingridients directly into the air. So the developers were able to maintain a neutral environment for the process of crystallization does not interfere the production of glass.
Experiments with addition of aluminium oxide was carried out before, but they were all unsuccessful, as the mixture in the container was crystalasied too quickly. Then the scientists from Tokyo decided to use oxygen, raising all the component parts into the air and mixing them with a laser. The result was a completely transparent, very strong glass, 50% consisting of aluminum oxide.
The new glass has a fantastic strength which can be compared with steel. In the near future developments are planned for the entry of the glass into mass production. According to scientists, the release of super-strong glass to the mass market may occur within the next five years.
